Finding Work-Life Balance- Major Worklife Issue of Every Bangladeshi Woman

As soon as you check the gender ratio in the Bangladesh Garment industry, you find out that women are an integral part of this industry. It won't be wrong to state that it has more women than men. This developing country is taking a step forward by embracing women in the workplace. As a garment factory worker, every woman needs to follow a shift of eight hours at least. And it's when the issue of Work-Life Balance arises for Women in Bangladesh.

They have families to feed, kids to look after, and home to manage. In their society, men are breadwinners and women are homemakers. Men support women but it's the primary duty of women to manage their home quite well.

After completing a tiresome shift at work, handling home is nothing but a challenge. In this post, I will explain work life issues for women working in Bangladesh Garment industries alongside some solutions that help them find some balance in their professional work and personal life. Let's get started.

What are Problems for Working Women in Bangladesh?

Here are some common problems women face in the garment sector of Bangladesh.

Society Expectations

People expect more from women than from men. It won't be wrong if I say that Bangladeshi society expect their women to me "SUPER WOMEN". They don't mind it if a woman like to be a part of workforce. But they really mind it when she doesn't take care of her home. This level of expectation put stress on the mind of women. Men on the other hand are free souls, they don't have to deal with such expectations. As a results, they earn and live their lives as they like. Societal expectations keep women stressful. If they don't manage home well and can't contribute in kids care, they need to hear some bad remarks.

Relationship Issues

It's quite possible that the husband allows the wife in Bangladesh to work but if she doesn't manage her home well, her In-laws judge her. Women try to complete every task to the best of their ability but if they don't, it might lead to broken marriages and harm in other relationships. Women who become independent prefer living alone than with their in-laws and it's the main issue that leads to other marital and life issues. This continuous stress and pressure affects her mental, physical, and psychological health. Very soon, her productivity level drops.

Inflexible Working Hours

Women demand flexible working hours and some work breaks during shift in Bangladesh Garment sector. The reason behind this demand is to keep check on their families and homes. They want to get some break to complete home tasks. However, such flexibility isn't available. Even part-time jobs options are limited in Bangladesh. Women working in banking sector also go through the same work-life balance.

Insomnia

Female garment factory workers wake up early in the morning, complete their shift, get back to home, handle the routine, and then when they try to sleep they can't. The reason is non-stop work, high stress level of mind and body, overworking, and others. This insomnia makes the problem worst for them over time. Lack of sleep affects their focus at work and many times it make them do some blunders, which cost them their job.

How to Find Work-Life Balance?

It's time to nip the evil in the bud and try to locate some balance in your life. Let me help you.

Take it Easy

Your life is Yours. If you think that you can meet all expectations of society and live your life by their standards then it's a big mistake. You can meet only reasonable expectations. If they want you to be Superhuman and woman, you can't be. You are just a normal person, who needs rest, proper sleep, and happiness. Keep reminding yourself that and try to adjust your routine as per your needs.

Take Breaks

Don't work nonstop, take a break from work and also life. Your mind and body needs rest. As you are sharing the burden of life with your partner, ask him to contribute to your personal life. Divide duties of children, so you don't have to do it all.

Understand New Dynamics of Your Life

You are no longer living in a traditional and conservative family where you are the only one who needs to take care. You are working hard to split the cost of living with your partner. It's time to understand that both of your careers are important. If they aren't that valuable, then why are you working in the first place?  Sit with your partner and immediate family, share your work and tell them how your life has changed and what to expect from you. You are a human being, not a machine that can be programmed to handle a job perfectly.

Feel Empowerment

Humans can work but they need to rest as well. If you are making money for your family but still being judged by them, it's wrong. Canada launched garment factories in Bangladesh to empower women. Understand your power and then adjust accordingly. Do what you can do by staying within your right limits. Don't cross your body limits, you are not a superhuman.
